John Giannini is a veteran photojournalist, video journalist and filmmaker with more than four decades of experience. He began his career as a US Army combat photographer and served two tours in Vietnam. He has covered major stories all over the world for some of the world’s major news magazines & newspapers, including The New York Times, Time, Life, Newsweek and international photo agencies.

 

He was the first staff photographer based in China for Agence France-Presse. He continues to produce stories for AFPTV, the video division of AFP.

 

He has lived in the world’s major capitals - Paris, London, Beijing, Hong Kong - and traveled some of the world’s most dangerous back roads - Vietnam, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Nicaragua to name a few.

 

He produced Taking the Beach for ABC News NIGHTLINE  to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. He worked on Errol Morris’ first documentary The Gates of Heaven and worked on George Csicsery’s Where the Heart Roams, N is a Number, Julia Robinson and Hilbert's Tenth Problem and Taking the Long View: The Life of  Shiing Shen Chern

 

In 1983 he began producing and directing the documentary FINALLY A VOICE: The Birth of the Vietnam Veterans of America, originally entitled Passage to Power. The film was completed in July, 2015. In 1986 he was named Artist of the Year for Film-making by the Marin Arts Council.

 

He was the president of The Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong from 1996 - 1997 and is also a member of The Frontline Club in London, Overseas Press Club and International Documentary Association.

 

After many years living abroad, he returned to United States in 2004 and now lives in Southern California.
